Lava Beds National Monument...

Since Hubs had New Years Day off we wanted to go do a bit of exploring. We know pretty much nothing about there is to do around here. We were thinking Crater Lake which isn't too far, but we were worried about snow and I accidentally left the kids snow gear back at our other home.
Mid morning we packed a lunch and some warmer clothes, just in case, and hopped Hubs' car. We hadn't been south of K Falls so we decided to just hop on the highway in that direction. We passed by the most amazing farm lands. This is major farm country! And about 30 miles out of town we see a sign for the Lava Beds. We got all excited because next week when we start homeschooling we were going to learn about volcanoes. By the time we finally got to the ranger station the kids were starving...

After looking around and reading up on the history of the area inside the Ranger Station we talked to the Rangers and they told us to go to the Mushpot cave and that it was perfect for kids. It was just a short walk behind the station.

Steep stairs but that was the hardest part.

This cave is lit so we didn't need flashlights and it was paved so we didn't have to worry about the kids getting hurt. Mac was really fascinated by it and he just couldn't believe that he was in cave.

We wanted to explore more but Oak was getting grumpy. We will for sure be going back!
